The First 100 Reports
The Alpine Near-Miss Survey is collecting its First 100 Reports
and needs your help.
What is a Near-Miss?
A near-miss is an unintended, unsafe situation that could have resulted in injury but for a lucky intervention. We catalog near-misses because studies show that they outnumber accidents 10 to 1, which gives us a bigger pool of incidents to study. Studying near-misses may also identify unsafe trends before they result in accidents.
Who Can Report?
Mountain rescuers, climbing guides, and recreational climbers may all submit reports. The Survey is designed to catalog factors that contribute to near-misses and accidents that occur in high-risk, high-consequence activities in the alpine environment.
Anonymous and Open
The Alpine Near-Miss Survey is an anonymous and open near-miss reporting system. Personally identifying information is never published, except at the request of the reporter.
